What shapes this journey

How to experience Meghalaya

Shillong and Sohra combine easily, while Dawki, Mawlynnong and the deeper Jaintia side need deliberate routing. In a short trip, choosing one direction each day keeps the experience enjoyable.

A well-paced route uses Shillong as a hub, gives Sohra enough time for walks and keeps Dawki or Mawsynram as a focused day rather than stacking everything together.

Places worth making time for

Weather changes quickly, so carry a light rain layer even outside the wettest months. Root-bridge walks, village etiquette and local cafés are best enjoyed without a stopwatch.

Stay and move well

Split nights between Shillong and one landscape-led base if you want early access to walks and viewpoints. A single city base is simpler, but it creates longer daily drives.

Weather and timing

Winter offers clearer road travel; spring stays green and comfortable. The monsoon is visually powerful but demands flexibility around rain and outdoor access.

Useful planning window: October to May. The final sequence should still follow the exact dates, local conditions and the travellers’ comfort.
